With Albert Einstein (Wootton Bassett) returning to sprinting in Saturday's Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury, the expected fireworks display was postponed for now by the outsider Song Of The Clyde (Sergei Prokofiev) in a genuine upset.
A journeyed two-year-old in 2025 with a win in York's Harry's Half Million his chief piece of form, the winner did have a major plus in his profile in that he hails from the Clive Cox stable which churns out top performers in this category year upon year with unerring proficiency.
Dominating his small group from the start on what could be a faster strip of ground towards the stand's rail, the Middleham Park Racing colourbearer joined Ballydoyle's 6-4 favourite inside the final furlong and edged it to prevail by a neck. There was a 2 1/2-length margin back to last year's Windsor Castle winner Havana Hurricane (Havana Gold) in third.
Cox, who also has Coppull for the Commonwealth Cup, said, “It was a very warm renewal. He became very streetwise last year in those sales races, as you have to be hardy in them. I was a little bit worried that he was quite fresh before the race today, but clearly he was full of exuberance and wellbeing.”
“Coppull is another wonderful horse and I'm thrilled to have him on my hands as well and he goes for the Sandy Lane next Saturday, all being well. I don't see why we wouldn't roll the dice in the Commonwealth Cup with this lad at this stage. He has got every reason he should be there and I would be disappointed if he wasn't.”
Paul Smith said of Albert Einstein, “We were happy with him and he will improve again. Ryan was happy enough with him so he is going in the right direction. I think we will get him back and make a plan. At the moment we are happy with what he is doing and he is going in the right direction.”

The dam is a half to the fast and precocious Ardenode (Hellvelyn), who captured the Listed Prix la Fleche and was third in the G3 Prix du Bois. She has the two-year-old filly Fern Clyde (Lope Y Fernandez) and a yearling full-brother to the winner who was sold for €92,000 to Rosetown Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale.
